TRIP DETAILS

So on the first weekend of August 2018, my friends and I embarked on a 3D/2N Flores sailing trip with the company Lyladventure. Believe it or not, we've planned this trip from as far as four (maybe even five) months in advance! Since all my friends were foreigners and I was the only Indonesian, I volunteered to do most of the research to ensure that we get the most out of the price we are paying (read: not being ripped off). After researching perhaps a dozen of sailing companies around Flores, we found that Lyladventure was the most fitting one. Why?

BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEAN BAGS AND FLOATIES.

No but for real. That and also because their price was considered to be one of the most affordable ones, of course. Even though many of my foreigner friends assumed that the company doesn't look too legit at first (because they still use personal bank transfer system for example), I managed to gather enough reviews from other people who have previously sailed with Lyladventure through Instagram, and the reviews doesn't seem too bad in my opinion.... So, if you're looking for an honest review of the 3D/2N Flores sailing trip with Lyladventure, read ahead.

Day 1 - Arriving in Labuan Bajo

  • Experienced my first propeller plane flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo, and it was every bit as exciting as I'd hoped it would be (complete with the rough plane landing as well). Proceeded to wait for the rest of my friends to arrive in Labuan Bajo and was subsequently picked up by the company's driver to the hotel where we would spend the first night in

  • First night's stay was in L Bajo hotel, a decent hotel located within close proximities to the small town of Labuan Bajo, and was close to a supermarket and other facilities

  • After dropping our luggages off in the hotel, we were then transported to a nearby local night market, where we met the rest of the trip attendants and had our first taste of local Floresian delicacies which consisted of fresh, grilled seafood (yum!)

Day 2 - Sailing trip begins!

  • Sailing trip begins!!! After successfully negotiating with the trip's guide about getting 6 of my friends and I to board on the same boat (there were 2 boats, each with capacities for 10 and 8), we met with the 3 additional people whom we would be sharing the boat with for the next 3 days, and were glad to see that they were nice people as well!

  • Stopped on our first island, where we managed to hike a small hill to reach a picturesque vantage point (picture 2)

  • Trekked to Rinca Island, where we saw the impressive and deadly Komodo dragons in their natural habitat

  • Sailed through the sunset, and eventually spending the night on the rooftop deck of the boat (to watch the stars, and also to avoid the cockroaches that were otherwise inescapable in the bedrooms of the boat)

Day 3 - Snorkelling day

  • Started the day with a sunrise hike to the most picturesque Padar Island

  • Sailed and snorkelled to the bay of Flores' famous Pink Beach, where the sand was genuinely the colour of pink, which occurred naturally as a result of crushed corals

  • Hopped to another island where the shade of the water was the most unbelievable shade of turquoise!

  • Anchored to rest in Kalong island, where we witnessed thousands of bats migrate from their caves and out into the wild during sunset

Day 4 - Kanawa Island

  • Spent the first half of the day in snorkelling and sun-tanning in Kanawa Island before it was finally time to end the sailing trip...

QUICK SUMMARY

Pro's of Lyladventure

  • Value for price!

  • Decent boat and hotel

  • Great food all throughout the trip!

  • Fun guide and boat crews

  • Amazing spots

  • Great facilities

  • Good transfers before and after the trip

Con's of Lyladventure

  • NO FLOATIES (thankfully we could borrow the pink flamingo floatie from another boat)

  • Less than average toilet facilities on the boat (which didn't really bother us considering my friends and I were all used to 'travelling' conditions, but could perhaps bother those not used to it)
